The maker of this astrolabe, Muhammad Muqim, was the grandson of Allahdad of Lahore. Allahdad was appointed as an astrolabe maker to the Mughal Emperor Humayun, and his family workshop continued producing instruments for the Mughal court for several generations. This particular astrolabe contains a latitude plate with the accompanying Arabic inscription: "the latitude is 72° and several days are 24 hours long". 72° is located north of the Arctic circle (which is just under 67°), making this an extraordinary projection for inclusion. Unusual features are characteristic of instruments produced by the Lahori workshop for their patrons who often appreciated innovations.
