Print featuring Pieter Merkus, Dutch Governor of the Moluccas, offering babirusa to the Astrolabe expedition crew

This lithograph based on an original work by French watercolourist and draightsman Louis Auguste de Sainson, which he produced while part of the expedition of the Astrolabe led by Jules D'Urville between 1826 and 1829. It depicts a scene in which the Dutch Governor of the Moluccas, Pieter Merkus, offers to the crew of the Astrolabe two babirusas, which he had been keeping at Manado in Sulawesi.
