This early 20th century photograph provides documentation of the presence of Indians in Singapore, providing indications as to the costume and occupations of the Indian residents. The negative is also an important record of the development of photography in Singapore, and the nature of subjects that were being chosen to be documented in this then-expensive medium. Oftentimes these photographs were of anonymous subjects, but are an important record for future research into these historical spaces and communities.
