Lady Sophia Raffles was the wife of Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, having married him in 1817. This letter is part of a collection of letters written by her to the Revd Thomas Raffles, who was her husband’s cousin. Written from her home in High Wood, the letter thanks Revd Raffles for his kindness, in a time when she was still sinking in despair in the wake of her husband Raffles’ death in July that year.
