This work is a unique amalgamation of the techniques of Chinese ink and Lim’s Western art training. Lim learned Chinese ink from his father, Lim Hak Tai and furthered his studies in Western art in Chelsea School of Art. This work was painted from Lim’s memory of a topographical view that he saw from the aeroplane. The dreamlike and fantastical atmosphere is rendered through the thin layered and spiral of the white clouds. The long and winding river is signified through the division of the land and water created through the sinuous outlines. The houses are outlined in strokes resembling brush strokes, signifying Lim’s knowledge of Chinese ink techniques.
