This metal tag belonged to Lance Sergeant Anthony Bowden Newsom, an intelligence officer with the 8th Division Intelligence Section, 2nd Australian Imperial Force (AIF). The 2nd AIF was an all-volunteer army and served in both theatres of WWII. The 8th Division served in different parts of the Asia-Pacific region and Newsom was captured in Malaya after the fall of Singapore. In Changi, Newsom helped to found the 'AIF Education Centre', which was the Changi Library. Along with around seven other men, Newsom manned the library and purportedly slept alongside the books at night.
