This sabre would have been made for a senior ranking army official of the British East India Company. It is of Mameluke form, characterised by its curved blade and distinctive cross-hilt. The sabre’s crosspiece and chape is decorated with the lion rampant symbol, the mark of the East India Company found in its heraldic arms. Its unique design and inclusion of the owner’s family crest in the form of the lamb’s head device suggests that the sabre would have been a bespoke piece.
