This blue robe with horse-hoof cuffs belonged to a Peranakan Chinese man from Malacca. It is a garment echoing influences of Manchurian riding garments in Qing dress of the time. Peranakans wear a variety of clothing which reflect their hybrid styles and identities. Early photographs from the 19th century reveal Chinese style clothing as the preferred sartorial choice of Peranakan Chinese men, possibly as a reflection of their Chinese heritage.
