This informal ladies’ silk robe features repeated medallions with phoenix and peony motifs. It has a centre-opening, a stylised cloud collar in contrasting cream to the black base, and a striking bright blue piping around the edges. The cream panels are colourfully decorated with auspicious flowers such as chrysanthemum, peach blossom and quatrefoil motifs. The robe is further embellished with smaller motifs around the medallion including auspicious symbols such as fans and peach blossoms. This elegant robe may have been made in China for an export market. The repeated medallions correspond with the designs of robes and material culture associated with the Peranakan Chinese of Singapore and Malaya. The style of the loose knot stitches outlined with gold-wrapped threads is also similar to what we find on Chinese fashion worn by the Chinese diaspora in Southeast Asia during the early 20th century. This robe belonged to Elizabeth “Betty” Boey (1919-2005), mother of the donor. Her first husband was Peranakan Mr Ong Tiang Seng (son of the Ong Peng Hock and grandson of Ong Sam Leong). The robe was found among her belongings in her home in Surrey after she passed away.
