Since the mid 19th century, Peranakan grooms were photographed wearing imitations of Chinese court dress with rank badges for weddings. Prominent Peranakan Chinese of Southeast Asia have been documented to purchase titles from China for themselves in the 19th century as a status symbol, even though they did not serve in the Chinese court. They wore Chinese-style clothing as a reflection of their Chinese identity, particularly during festive occasions.
