This sarong (skirtcloth) is an example of the kain Bugis, usually worn by older women. It demonstrates the songket technique of weaving supplementary gold or silver weft threads introduced through trade. The central panel contains key motifs like ceremonial rice and plates, chains and stars amongst others. It is possibly Bugis in origin, as the Bugis of South Sulawesi favoured plaid textile layouts, often ornamented with songket.
