This studio portrait features Low Kway Song examining a print of his painting of Dr Sun Yat Sen. It is stamped at the bottom with the mark of “Mei Photographers.” Postcards were made featuring this painting and sold to raise funds for Sun Yat Sen’s revolutionary movement. Low Kway Song was a self-taught artist who painted portraits of notable personalities in Singapore and Malaya. Besides being a pioneer Singapore artist, he was also deeply involved in the performing arts as a member of the Merrilads Musical and Dramatic Association, a popular Peranakan performing group established in 1923.
