This very large banner depicts Magu (or Mazu), Goddess of the Sea in the Taoist pantheon of deities. . Large banners like these were usually commissioned for a special occasion, such as birthdays. This banner was presented to Mrs Souw Siaw Keng nee Tan Imm Nio on her 80th birthday.This is an important and diverse collection of Peranakan Chinese beadwork and embroidery from Indonesia. It contains unusual forms of beadwork and embroidery and are reflective of the fondness that Peranakan Chinese throughout Southeast Asia have for bright colours and ornate decorations.
