Tongkang were lighter or cargo-carrying boat used for transporting goods in the Singapore River. This mallet was used in the maintenance of the tongkangs by the crew, which comprised mainly of the Indian Caulker community. The Caulkers were predominantly involved in the profession of boat building and repair. Indians were employed as tongkang crew up to the 1990s.
