This brocade turban was most likely used as an accessory for an idol at a temple. Donating elaborate accoutrements for the presiding deity of a temple are quite common and popular in Hindu religious practice. Idols are usually dressed in the regional attire, which is changed on a regular basis, based on changes in season, months or the celebration of festivals.
