This cap was worn by a high ranking individual from one of the many Dayak groups of Borneo – perhaps the Kayan or Kenyah. It was probably worn for ceremonial purposes. The highly stylised dog-like motif which is repeated in alternate colours of yellow and green appears to represent the powerful Dayak dragon goddess (Aso). It is believed that this goddess rules the underworld, and is associated with human and agricultural fertility.
