Although the Tang shipwreck was built in the Middle East, very few objects from that region were discovered in the wreckage. This turquoise-glazed amphorae is only one of two recovered from the wreck. Turquoise-glazed amphorae were widely exported, perhaps as containers for date syrup. They have been found throughout Asia, for example, in the Bujang Valley (Malaysia) and at Sri Mahosot (Thailand), as well as in tombs and Buddhist temples in China. The Tang Shipwreck is a 9th century vessel that was en route from China back to the Middle East when it sank off the coast of Belitung Island in the Java Sea.
