This type of amphora - also known as a "torpedo jar" - was produced in southwest Iran. This has been confirmed by chemical analysis of the bitumen lining covering its inside. Bitumen - also known as asphalt - was used to waterproof the inside of ceramic vessels in antiquity. This jar most likely contained a liquid of some kind, perhaps wine, olive or date palm oil, or water for the crew.
