Gajalakshmi – Lakshmi being venerated by elephants – sits under an ornate archway on her lotus. The painting is made to look like a temple shrine – as it was manufactured for the user to create a small version of a temple in the home. Typical of Tanjore painting, the figure is heavily ornamented, with crown, necklaces and garlands. The elephants are similarly accoutred.
