"This is a copy of the 1897 book ‘In Court and Kampong’ by Sir Hugh Clifford, containing nineteen tales of life within Malaya, seen through the colonial lens with the prejudices that involved. Clifford served as the British Resident-General in Pahang, Governor of North Borneo and Governor of the Straits Settlements and British High Commissioner in Malaya. His tales are both drawn from his observations and stories related to him by others. They describe Malays and life from the royal court to the villages.Clifford’s colonial leanings are clear in his language. The author’s preface describes Malaya as a land of ‘brown men and obscure things in a distant and very little-known corner of the Earth.’ He also states his aim to ‘give some idea of the lives lived in these lands by [...] those Malays who, being yet untouched by contact with white men, are still in a state of original sin’.
