This pair of gilded candlesticks is made of wood and attached to a carved, wooden base. A dragon decorates the body of each candlestick. Clouds roll down the candlesticks alongside each dragon. Attached to the top of the candlesticks are deities riding birds. One of the candlesticks is decorated with Shou Lao, the star God of Longevity, riding a crane. The other is decorated with the female deity, He Xiangu, one of the Eight Immortals, identifiable by the lotus in her hand. She too is riding a crane. Both candlesticks are attached to a pair of carved hexagonal wooden bases. Based on the decorative motifs used on this pair of candlesticks, it is possible that these would be placed on the ancestral altar in a Peranakan Chinese household. The combination of Shou Lao, He Xiangu and cranes suggest wishes for longevity and immortality which would be appropriate for honouring ancestors. The candlesticks were likely made by Chinese craftsmen in China or Singapore.
