This play marked the revival of Peranakan theatre in the 1980s after a nearly twenty year disappearance. Unlike in the 1950s, the cast contained both men and women. Felix Chia’s Pileh Menantu was performed as part of the 1984 Arts Festival, marking a change from the amateur productions of the brief post-war resurgence of Peranakan theatre.
