'Majulah Singapura', which means 'Onward Singapore' in Malay, was originally composed by Zubir Said for the City Council to commemorate the reopening of the Victoria Theatre in 1958 following renovation works. After Singapore gained self-government in 1959, the song became Singapore's national anthem following slight amendments.
