Walter Gibson was an American adventurer who was imprisoned for 15 months by the Dutch in the East Indies. This book documents his account of his visit to Sumatra and his experiences in prison. He frequently mentions Singapore in his writings, on one occasion recounting a meeting with the Panyorang (or Prince) of Palembang in which the latter spoke of Raffles as 'Tuan Besar Ingres' (or the English great man) whom the people did not believe was dead and "looked for his coming again".
