Frederick Christian Lewis (1813-1875), studied under Sir Thomas Lawrence, went to India and painted pictures of durbars for native princes, engraved by his father, and published in England. This is one example. This engraving depicts the Durbar in which the then Maharajah of Travancore, HH Uthram Thirunal Marthanda Varma receives the letter of HM the Queen Victoria from the British Resident, Major General W.Cullen. The Queen’s letter was sent in thanks for the gift of an ivory throne sent by the Maharajah for the Great Exhibition in London (1851).
