In this letter, handwritten and signed by Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, Raffles writes to the Rev. C. Evans, a Baptist missionary who had arrived at Bencoolen that year, supporting his plan to read the scriptures in the Malay language, urging him to focus his attention in overseeing the native school, and being proactive in going into the villages to enquire into the state, condition and employment of the people. Raffles also reveals his plans for the future, indicating his wish to leave the region within four or five years.
