Tiffin carrier

This is a three tiered food container or ‘tingkat’. It was probably used to deliver food to customers or carried the lunch of workers. It is opened by unlocking a small catch on either side of the handle, then removing it. This piece is possibly made from enamel. This is a material made by fusing powdered glass to a substrate by firing, usually between 750 and 850°C. The powder melts, flows, and then hardens to a smooth, durable vitreous coating on metal. This piece is decorated with floral designs of flowers with white and blue petals. This is set against a green background.
