This pink four-tiered metal container, known as a tiffin carrier or tingkat, was used to store and transport food. It is made of metal coated with vitreous enamel, a smooth, durable layer of glass fused to the surface at high temperatures.
Decorated with butterflies among flowering branches, the tiffin carrier also bears well wishes in Malay: “Slamat bukka” (open safely) on the lid; “Slamat pakkey” (happy using) on the top two tiers, and “Slamat untong” (wishing you good fortune) on the bottom tier.
