Tubular fitting

This hollow tapering tube with enamel decoration in red, blue, green, yellow, brown and white cloud scrolls on a turquoise ground, is thought to have been a fitting for a sedan chair. The top and bottom borders are gilded and one end is incised with the six-character mark of Kangxi. The cloisonné work on this fitting is typical of the high quality objects made for imperial use. The use of brightly coloured glass pastes and gilding on cloisonné objects made the decorative style a popular means of adorning palace utensils and ritual vessels from the 15th century onwards. The piece bears the reign mark of the Kangxi period on the rim. This piece was displayed during the Kangxi exhibition (13th March-14th June 2009) at ACM.
