'Susancai' bowl

'Susancai', translated as ‘plain three-coloured’, is a method of ceramic making that entails the painting of enamels onto an unglazed body or thinly glazed body which is then fired. The three colours referred to here are yellow, green and aubergine-purple. Beneath the enamels on this bowl are lightly incised dragon motifs and there is a reign mark of Emperor Kangxi on the base of the bowl. This bowl attests to the technical virtuosity and creativity of the potters during Kangxi’s reign.
