This blue woollen cheongsam probably belonged to Mrs Kwok Swee Ying’s mother. This is an example of a typical modern cheongsam from the 1920s to the early 1930s. The loose cut silhouette is similar to the men’s long robe, changpao(长袍), suggesting that the early form of the modern cheongsam was androgynous looking. The cheongsam is decorated with floral buttons at the collar while the sides are secured by simple knotted buttons. The collar of the cheongsam is low, another common feature of the early cheongsam. The simple design of the cheongsam and the colour suggests that this was probably worn by an older woman.
