This is a box from Esquire, the Men’s Shop, a specialised men ’s wear shop that was located at High Street in Singapore. High Street was the main shopping street before Orchard Road replaced it in the 1970s. Esquire first opened its doors in 22 December 1958 and was an air-conditioned shop that sold Western-style clothing and accessories for the upper-middle class men. This box was probably used to pack men’s clothing. Boxes were used to pack men’s wear for the customer so as to keep the structure of the clothing. The box also reveals the preference for Western-style clothing among upper-middle class men in Singapore in the mid-20th century.
