This is a set of documents pertaining to the power of attorney issued by Abdulrahman bin Abdul Kader bin Abdulrahman bin Mohamed Al-Idrus to his brother, Ibrahim bin Abdulkader bin Abdulrahman Al-Idrus. It includes a copy of the original document written in Arabic and two translations of the document in Malay and English. Ibrahim was authorized to collect all the property of Abdulrahman located in Hadhramaut and Java or elsewhere. He could take possession of houses and lands and look after all the properties and repair anything that was in disrepair. He could also sue and be sued, pay his partner’s share, and make compromises at his discretion. This power of attorney was confirmed by the Mohammedan Law judge at Tarim, Abdulrahman bin Ahmed Fadul Abdulgamey Bil-Haj Bafadul. He wrote it on behalf of Abdulrahman bin Abdul Kader. This document was first translated from Arabic to Malay by Abdulrahman bin Mohamed Ali-Khatid Irawalatid and subsequently translated from Malay to English on 25 April 1895.This document is part of the John Koh collection which comprises of various legal documents in Arabic, Jawi, and English, and serves as a record of the 19th and early 20th century colonial legal systems in Singapore and the interactions of various ordinary individuals with the law.
