This is an English translation of the power of attorney issued on 26 July 1918 by Sharifa Zahara binte Ahmed bin Hussain bin Sahil of Terim in Hadhramaut to Syed Alawi bin Abubakar Alkaf of Singapore, who would manage her property and assets in Singapore. It was written by her husband Ali bin Ahmed bin Abibakar Alkaf on her behalf. Syed Alawi was authorized to conduct the following: to sell her house, No. 110 Queen Street, Singapore, by public auction or otherwise to any person for any price, to receive all properties belonging to her, to pay her debts, to solicit the assistance of any person, and to issue a power of attorney. This document was sealed by the Kadi of Terim, Shaik Ali bin Sallim bin Omar Arfan Ba Raja. It was first translated from Arabic to the Malay language by Haji Abdullah bin Omar of No. 52 Buffalo Road, Singapore on 21 November 1918. It was subsequently translated from Malay into English by the Malay interpreter of the Supreme Court of the Straits Settlements in Singapore on 6 December 1918.This document is part of the John Koh collection which comprises of various legal documents in Arabic, Jawi, and English, and serves as a record of the 19th and early 20th century colonial legal systems in Singapore and the interactions of various ordinary individuals with the law.
