Translation of Power of Attorney granted by Syed Awath bin Omar Al-Shalry

This is an English translation of the power of attorney granted by Syed Awath bin Omar Alshary to Syed Abdulrahman bin Abdullah Alkof on 29 December 1893. This document was translation no. 14 of 1894. Syed Abdulrahman was authorized to collect and receive all the rents due from the houses, lands, and cash owned by Syed Awath in Singapore, as well as those possessed by his wife, Sherifa Fatimah binte Aly bin Mahomed Aljunied. Syed Abdulrahman was also nominated as the executor and trustee of Sherifa Fatimah’s estate and the guardian of her underaged child. Lastly, he was also authorized to recover Syed Awath’s property that was in the possession of others, rent out property, and undertake legal proceedings to settle any matter. The beneficiaries of the estate of Sherifa Fatimah and the payment of their share were also to be managed by Syed Abdulrahman. Those who were of the age of 22 could have their shares paid to them, whereas those who were underage, and therefore the wards of Syed Awath, came under the responsibility of Syed Abdulrahman. This document is part of the John Koh collection which comprises of various legal documents in Arabic, Jawi, and English, and serves as a record of the 19th and early 20th century colonial legal systems in Singapore and the interactions of various ordinary individuals with the law.
