This is a set of documents concerning the power of attorney issued in 1884 by Sheriffa Noor binte Abibakar bin Mahomed Balfakiah to Syed Ahmad bin Shaik bin Abdulrahman Alkaff. This set contains a copy of the original document written in Arabic and two translations in Jawi and English. Syed Ahmad was authorized to manage Sheriffa Noor’s property at Upper Canal Road and to repair or re-erect the house. He was also allowed to borrow money on her behalf for the repairs of the house.The document was written by Ahmad bin Hussain bin Omar bin Sumit on her behalf, and was certified by the Kadi of Terim, Abdulrahman bin Ahwiad Fadil, to have been written according to the requirements of Mohammedan Law. It was first translated from Arabic to Malay by Hajee Abdulla of No. 132 Arab Street, Singapore on 16 February 1903. It was subsequently translated from Malay to English by the Chief Malay Interpreter of the Supreme Court of the Straits Settlements in Singapore on 25 February 1903.These documents are part of the John Koh collection which comprises of various legal documents in Arabic, Jawi, and English, and serves as a record of the 19th and early 20th century colonial legal systems in Singapore and the interactions of various ordinary individuals with the law.
