Once a muddy swamp, Orchard Road received its name from the nutmeg, pepper and gambier plantations as well as the fruit orchards that dominated the area in the 1840s. In the 1860s, a great number of private houses were built in Orchard Road and as shown in the photo, it remained that way well into the mid 20th century.
