This bowl is decorated with a broad band of floral sprays around the exterior and a minor band of floral motifs just under the rim. The designs are painted in red and green overglaze enamels.Similar decorative schemes were applied to large dishes, covered boxes and bowls during the 15th to 16th centuries. Enamelled bowls such as this were exported to Japan as teawares.Vietnam entered the international trade during the 14th century and produced the greatest volume and variety of wares for Southeast Asia, particularly Indonesia, Philippines and Malaysia. However, by the 16th century, due to intense competition from the Chinese kilns, the export of Vietnamese wares to these markets was greatly reduced.
