Turquoise glazed Mihrab tile

This Mihrab-shaped tile has been moulded and covered with a thick glaze. The inscription running around the sides of the tile contains Surah al-Qadr (The Night of Power). At the centre is an arch containing a pendant lamp, and below that is an interlaced inscription that is hard to decipher. It is likely that this piece was made for a funerary monument. Mihrab-shaped tiles are not necessarily only found in mosques. They were also used in homes or funerary monuments to help indicate the qiblah (direction of prayer).
