These tiles were probably intended for use inside a funerary monument. Moulded and painted with underglaze blue, the inscription contains part of a Qur’anic verse: ‘… the most Merciful. The Messenger believeth in what hath been revealed (to him from his Lord).’ The inscription raised in thulth, a cursive script, contains part of the surah al-baqarah (The Cow). The upper and lower bands have inscriptions of the opening verses of the surah al-Kahf (The Cave).
