This blue and white ‘guan’ (罐) jar has a slightly everted mouthrim, a bulging globular body with round shoulers tapering to a flat base. It features a central band of phoenix and peony motifs around its body in underglaze blue. The upper band around the shoulder is decorated with floral scrolls and the lower part of the vase contains stylised spiral motifs. Produced in Yunnan, South China, jars such as this share many similarities to blue and white wares produced in neighbouring Vietnam. They are similar stylistically and have a grayish celadon glaze.
