The Japanese military administration introduced a new set of currency notes as legal tender during the Occupation and adopted the colonial Straits dollar as their standard unit. The local population referred to it as ‘banana currency’ because some of the notes carried the motif of a bunch of bananas, such as the ten dollar note seen here. By the end of the Occupation, the notes were practically worthless.
