Many Indian labourers were employed in public works such as road repairs and laying water and electricity pipelines. Others worked in cottage industries such as brick making. They usually left their families behind in their home countries in order to be an indentured worker in Singapore, and eventually returned home. This print captures the contemplative mood of such a labourer as he is taking a break.
