Singapore had an active brick manufacturing industry in first half of the twentieth century, continuing well into the 1980s. A critical material in building construction, modern bricks were locally produced in factories situated in areas around Jurong, Choa Chu Kang, Alexandra, and Bukit Merah. This brick, with the Jurong Brickworks mark (J. B. W.), was recovered from the former site of Singapore Naval Base in the vicinity of present-day Woodlands North.
