This is a pair of embroidered vases with base. The fabric is stiffened with a backing to form these three dimensional receptacles. The colourful decorative motifs of flowers (possibly peony blossoms) are created using tiny coloured glass ‘seed beads’ or ‘Rocaille beads’ threaded together. Such vases could be hung up on the wall as ornaments or placed on the dressing table where they held artificial flowers. Their purpose however was largely ornamental, meant to be enjoyed by others.
