This earthenware pottery has the form of a 'meiping' or plum vase with rounded shoulders that taper down to a small footring. The interesting feature of this type of vases of the Liao period is the flaring funnel-shaped mouth. The vase is covered in yellow and white glazes that stops midway to reveal an unglazed bottom half. The Liao dynasty inherited the ceramic technology from the Tang dynasty (618-906 CE) that preceded it. Liao wares, based on Tang types, comprised both earthenware and porcelain. Vases were covered in green, white or yellow monochrome glazes.
