This fairly sophisticated gold earring is made in the form of Mount Meru, the symbolic centre of the Buddhist cosmos, a motif which central to much of Javanese design between the 8th and the 15th centuries. It was made using a combination of lost-wax casting and engraving which allowed for more detailed decoration of objects. Indeed the period in which this earring was made is marked by an increasing level of technical sophistication in gold-working on Java.
