This rectangular embroidered beadwork panel features peonies set against a blue background. The technique of petit point is used here. This refers to embroidery done on a canvas backing. This panel contains several auspicious motifs of peonies, monkeys and pairs of golden fish. The fish are auspicious symbols in Buddhism that represent happiness, fertility and abundance. Monkeys are used as representative of an early incarnation of Buddha while peonies symbolised wealth and prosperity. The floral motifs appear crowded together with little empty space between them. This is characteristic of works using the Penang style of design. Stringing, threading and stitching were common techniques used to create such forms of Peranakan beadwork. Such panels could be used as table covers, ornamental hangings and pillow and bolster cases among others.
