Panel

This square embroidered panel is formed using the method of threading. Threading is a method where threads are put through tiny beads to form decorative patterns and motifs. The use of metallic beads here gives the panel a shiny and glossy appearance. This panel is filled with auspicious motifs that include the ‘Qilin’ (mythical hooved Chinese creature), the phoenix and pairs of Golden fish. The Golden fish is one of the eight auspicious symbols in Buddhism and represent fertility, abundance and happiness. The ‘Qilin’ is considered a good omen that brings serenity and prosperity while the phoenix symbolises high virtue and grace in a person. These panels were usually used as table covers, panels for picture frames, ornamental hangings, pillow and bolster cases just to name a few. Larger panels usually functioned as drapes for the wedding bed, doors, windows and altar tables among others. The auspicious designs on this panel meant that it was most likely used during wedding ceremonies.
