Mao strongly believed that literature and art should motivate the masses with positive examples of heroism and socialist idealism. The books, he felt should be written in the voice of the common people such as the workers, peasants, and soldiers, and not of the elite intellectuals. This principle was rigidly adhered to during the Cultural Revolution period (1966-76). This booklet was one such example that served to promote ideals of socialism.
